I’m SO excited about the newly released book for girls called, You Are Beautiful! I routinely work with adult women who need to receive this very message.
So, I’m MORE than happy to support the efforts of my dear friend Robyn Abdusamad, the author of this book and another called, Wahid and His Special Friend.
You Are Beautiful tells the story of two young sisters who experience their first encounter with racial prejudice, and who are saddened by what they hear.
Throughout the course of the story they overcome intolerance, and realize the beauty of ethnic diversity and true friendship.
This book highlights the importance of countering ignorance with knowledge and kindness.

FOOD EXPERIMENT: I saw some cream cheese in the fridge that my family was enjoying, and I realized “Hey, I want some cream cheese too.” But, I can’t eat it because of the dairy in it.
So, I decided to try to create an alternative for myself. I mixed mayo, butter and honey together, and put it on some gluten-free toast. It definitely did NOT taste like cream cheese, but it was tasty.
Note: The Mayo & Butter are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and vegan! Oh so delish and healthier too!
2 parts Butter
1 part Mayonnaise
2 parts Honey
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl, and whisk with a fork till well blended.
In the wake of the loss of Robin Williams, among countless others, due to the agony of depression, I knew that I must shine a light on this very sad, and often very lonely illness. Any negative health condition can impact your relationships. I believe mental health challenges have the biggest potential to do so, because many people are still so uninformed about the vast ramifications they can have, both on the person suffering from the condition as well as on those around them. This article is my attempt to remove the veil of shame and shine the light of knowledge to help minimize unnecessary suffering.
Depression and Anxiety Disorders are serious medical illnesses that impact the lives and livelihoods of over 40 million U.S. residents. That means over 18% of the American population has been diagnosed with one or both of these devastating conditions. These numbers don’t even factor in the family, friends and colleagues of those who are diagnosed, and the negative impact these diseases have on the loved ones of those who are living with them.
An overwhelming feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and inadequacy that is typically felt over a period of time are the hallmarks of Depression.
Anxiety Disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., according to ADAA.org. They develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality & life events.
We all feel sad & blue, at times. It’s a normal emotion just like happiness and frustration. The problem comes when it’s not just a passing feeling of unhappiness. That’s when it can literally destroy parts of your life, including your job/school performance, marriage, parent-child dynamics, etc.
So, How Do You Know If You Or A Loved One May Be Suffering From Depression?
For major depression, you may experience a sad or depressed mood, or an inability to feel pleasure, plus five or more of the following symptoms, for at least a two-week period
If you notice the symptoms listed above, it’s time to see a Qualified health care provider. Just as you wouldn’t go to see your Clergy first if you went into Labor, or to fix your Heart Attack symptoms, you should treat conditions of the brain, i.e. Mental Health with the same level of diligence and concern. Go seek professional medical help, if you’re experiencing these symptoms, or any others that alarm you.
How Do We Treat Depression?
There are a number of approaches that can be effective in treating depression. Here are just a few:
I trust that this article will serve to inform and encourage you about the realities of battling depression or any other mental health challenge. You are certainly NOT alone, and there should be NO stigma attached with getting professional help for any health condition you may face. With that said, prayer and faith do have their place in healing and treatment of any condition. I always add them to any other form of medical treatment I pursue.
